UPDATE: View a photo montage from the 2010-2011 exchange to Yunnan below:
In December of 2010, ten members of the Inter-United Foundation joined our international cultural exchange representatives, Tim and Ginny Powell, in Mengzi, Yunnan, China. This group travelled to four cities in the province of Yunnan, bringing music and soccer to our friends in southern China. This was the Inter-United Foundation’s third exchange to this region.
While in China, the Inter-United Band and foundation volunteers travelled to the city of Wenshan. They celebrated Christmas by traveling to the small surrounding villages to bring gifts and music to local children and families. It has been two years since we last visited and celebrated Christmas with them and we were excited to return! From Wenshan, IUF travelled to Funing. Here we visited local middle schools and a high school to put on concerts for their students. Invitations were given to enter the classrooms and interact with the students one-on-one. From Funing, IUF travelled to Mengzi, where we were once again united with friends and faculty members at Honghe University. Here we celebrated the New Year with a concert by the Inter-United Band for the student body.
This cultural exchange brings awareness to young students by breaking down the international barriers that separate us. These friendships have impacted us as well as the Chinese people immensely. Our relationships have decreased the gap between two countries that are so closely related by economics but are culturally worlds apart. China has remained our focus for pursuing international friendships because the people have captivated our hearts since the first trip.
Through the languages of music and soccer, there is no need for translation because the love for each is universal. Investing in these relationships opens doors for future exchanges and friendships with schools and soccer communities in this region.
Thank you for your time and support!
