Since it’s beginning in 1997, Inter-United Soccer Club had the vision of taking the love of soccer around the world.
In 2006, 20 Inter-United Soccer club members – including trainers and players – traveled to China during their Christmas break and did just this. IUS traveled to the Yunnan Province and visited 4 cities: Funing, Wenshan, Mengzi, and Kunming.
James Powell and the Inter-United Band put on a Christmas concert for the city of Funing & local schools. Thousands of locals showed up to celebrate and share their own performances. Two cultures came together to celebrate new friendships that night.
The Inter-United Club members then traveled to the city of Wenshan. On Christmas day, the IUS crew hiked up to a remote village and passed out soccer balls donated by Uniroyal and t-shirts donated by Challenge Sports. The whole village met the club in the village school yard. The IUS Crew also brought gifts from home to give to the children. The day was filled with music and basketball games to entertain the small village.
The final stop was at Honghe University in Mengzi. When IUS arrived at the university, they were received with an overwhelming and warm welcome. Huge banners welcomed IUS across the campus and the University provided a seven course meal for the IUS Crew. During the next day, the IUS trainers provided a training session for the University Team. After lunch, Jim Powell, President of IUS, spoke before Honghe University students and teachers about pursuing their dreams.
Later in the day, Inter-United played the Honghe University team in their beautiful brand new stadium. Thousands of students and teachers came out to watch as the IUS Crew won 7 goals to 5 goals. The atmosphere for this game was one of friendship, excitement and wonder. The game between Inter-United and Honghe was a historic event; it was the first game to be played in the University’s new stadium and it was the first international match held at Honghe University.
That night, Honghe University and the IUS Crew celebrated Christmas together with a huge concert put on by the IUS Crew and incredible performances put on by the Honghe University.
Before leaving, the Inter-United Soccer Club and Honghe University signed an agreement to continue the relationship by bringing over 10 of the University’s teachers and players for a 3 week exchange in the United States during the summer of 2007.
